This half term we will be learning...
Phonics
We follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme. A weekly information sheet will be sent home via ClassDojo to inform parents what children have been learning that week. Please support children at home by practicing the phonemes, tricky words and sentences. The images below shows how children are taught to form letters correctly and the sounds they have already learnt.
English
This half term in English, Year 1 will enjoy exploring the stories Omar, the Bees, and Me and The Tiny Seed. Through these texts, children will develop their reading, writing and speaking skills while learning about nature, growth and caring for the world around us. Our English learning links closely with our science topic on plants, allowing children to make exciting cross‑curricular connections as they learn how plants grow and why they are important. We will be encouraging curiosity, thoughtful discussion and creative responses throughout our work.
Maths
Our Maths curriculum follows the White Rose Maths scheme, which is designed to help children develop a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts.
In maths this half term, Year 1 will be developing their understanding of mass and volume, multiplication and division, and fractions. Children will explore these concepts through practical, hands‑on activities, including comparing and measuring, sharing and grouping objects, and finding equal parts of shapes and amounts. We will encourage children to explain their thinking, use mathematical vocabulary confidently, and apply their learning to real‑life situations.
Science
In science this half term, Year 1 will be learning all about plants. Children will explore where plants come from, learn to name a variety of wild and garden plants, and take part in growing their own plants from seeds. They will also learn about what plants need to survive, such as water, light and warmth, and observe how plants change as they grow. Through hands‑on investigation and careful observation, children will develop their curiosity and scientific understanding
History
In History this half term, Year 1 will be learning about ‘Brambles at the Beach’, exploring how seaside holidays and life by the coast have changed over time. Children will compare the past and present, learning about beach holidays within living memory as well as events and people from Victorian times and beyond. They will discover how lighthouses and lifeboats helped save lives, learn about brave and heroic individuals linked to sea rescues, and explore the work and legacy of organisations such as the RNLI. Through stories, pictures and other sources, children will look for similarities and differences between old and modern seaside life while developing their understanding of change over time.
Art
This term in Art, children will explore landscapes, castles and coastal scenes, working with a wide range of materials and techniques. They will study the work of artists such as Paul Klee and Claude Monet, using these as inspiration to create their own pieces. Throughout the unit, children will experiment with drawing simple shapes, creating collage textures, using colour washes, and mixing tints and shades to show depth and movement. They will learn how to select appropriate materials, develop their scissor and brush control, and explore different painting techniques to represent texture, light and colour. By the end of the unit, children will have created their own imaginative castle artwork and a seaside landscape composition, showcasing their growing confidence and creativity across different media.
RE
For our RE studies we follow the Kirklees Agreed Syllabus.
In RE this half term, Year 1 will be learning about what it means to belong to a community, including a religious community. Children will explore different places of worship, learning what they might see there and what people do when they visit. They will begin to understand that these places are special or sacred to the people who use them, and will look at similarities and differences between places of worship. Through discussion and exploration, children will learn to recognise the difference between everyday objects and things that some people describe as holy or special, helping them to develop respect for different beliefs and ways of life.
PSHE
In PSHE this half term, Year 1 will be focusing on the Engage module from the myHappymind programme. Through this learning, children will develop positive attitudes to learning by understanding how their brain grows and how effort and practice help them improve. They will be encouraged to set simple goals, show resilience when learning feels tricky, and recognise that making mistakes is an important part of learning. The Engage module helps children to build confidence, motivation and a sense of achievement as learners.
Music
As musicians, we follow the Charanga music scheme. In Music Inspired by the World around us this term, children will explore new songs and enjoy singing together. They will learn about rhythm, pitch, and expression while having fun making music as a group.
