Break up

Break up for the October half term

This half term we will be learning...

English
This half term we will be reading the books Bear Hunt and Ruby's Worry. We will be having a focus on using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will also be using our phonics knowledge to support our writing. Towards the end of Autumn 1, we will be writing our very own non-chronological report - 'all about me'.

 Maths
Our Maths curriculum follows the White Rose Maths scheme, which is designed to help children develop a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts.

This half term we will be spending some time looking at place value to 10, were we will really secure our knowledge with numbers from 0-10. We will be sorting groups, recognising numbers as words, 1 more, 1 less, comparing and ordering numbers. We will then move onto addition and subtraction within 10.

Science
In our science learning this half term, we will be exploring animals including humans.
We will be naming our body parts that we can see and cannot see.  We will investigate do taller people have bigger hands? We will also look at why exercise is so important for us. Get moving today with Joe Wicks

History
Our first History topic in year 1 is 'there's only one me'.  During this topic we will look back in time to see how life has changed since our grandparents were kids. We will look at how houses have changed, how toys have changed and how schools have changed over the last 100 years.

  Art

Linked to our science topic, in Art children will be focusing on drawing and spirals. We will build an understanding about the way we can make marks on a drawing surface. We will explore how we hold a drawing tool, and move our bodies, will affect the drawings they make. We will begin to explore mark-making and experiment with how we can use the marks we make in our drawings.

RE

For our RE studies we follow the Kirklees Agreed Syllabus.

PSHE

In Year 1, we believe that it is important for children to develop a strong sense of self and an understanding of their place in the world. Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) topic this half term explores 'Being Me'.

Music

As musicians, we follow the Charanga music scheme. This half term our unit is called 'me!' We will be

  • Listening and responding to different styles of music
  • Embedding foundations of the interrelated dimensions of music
  • Learning to sing or sing along with nursery rhymes and action songs
  • Improvising leading to playing classroom instruments
  • Share and perform the learning that has taken place

We will also listen to our whole school 'Focused Artist' each week. Here we will experience a broad genre of music whilst deciding if we like or dislike what we have been listening to.
