Last day of half term

This half term we will be learning...

Phonics

We follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme. A weekly information sheet will be sent home via ClassDojo to inform parents what children have been learning that week. Please support children at home by practicing the phonemes, tricky words and sentences. The images below shows how children are taught to form letters correctly and the sounds they have already learnt.

English

We will begin by enjoying the lively story of The Queen’s Handbag. Children will use this text to inspire their own rewrite of the story, helping them develop their sequencing skills, vocabulary choices, and understanding of story structure.

Later in the half term, we will move on to the traditional tale The Three Little Pigs. After reading and discussing the story, pupils will be writing a letter from the perspective of one of the pigs, giving them the opportunity to practise writing in role and expressing ideas clearly and creatively.

It promises to be a fun and imaginative half term full of storytelling and developing key writing skills!

 Maths

Our Maths curriculum follows the White Rose Maths scheme, which is designed to help children develop a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts. This half-term in Maths, children will be developing their understanding of place value within 50, building on their previous learning of numbers within 20. They will explore how numbers are made up of tens and ones, practise counting forwards and backwards, find one more and one less, compare and order numbers, represent numbers in different ways, and use number lines to support their understanding. Alongside this, we will also begin our measurement unit following the White Rose Maths scheme, where children will learn to compare and measure length and height using practical, hands-on activities and everyday language.

Science
In our science learning this half term, we will be looking at materials. We will begin by sorting objects by the materials they are made of. We will list everyday materials and describe their simple properties. Below is a knowledge organiser displaying some of the vocabulary we will be learning and discussing.

History

This half-term in History, Year 1 will be learning about the Royal Family. Children will explore the modern Royal Family and learn about their roles today, as well as develop an understanding of the rule of law and why it is an important part of how our country is run. They will also look back at significant queens from the past, learning about the impact they had during their reigns. Through stories, pictures and simple historical enquiry, children will begin to understand how the monarchy has changed over time.

  Art

This term in Art, children will explore landscapes, castles and coastal scenes, working with a wide range of materials and techniques. They will study the work of artists such as Paul Klee and Claude Monet, using these as inspiration to create their own pieces. Throughout the unit, children will experiment with drawing simple shapes, creating collage textures, using colour washes, and mixing tints and shades to show depth and movement. They will learn how to select appropriate materials, develop their scissor and brush control, and explore different painting techniques to represent texture, light and colour. By the end of the unit, children will have created their own imaginative castle artwork and a seaside landscape composition, showcasing their growing confidence and creativity across different media.

RE

For our RE studies we follow the Kirklees Agreed Syllabus.

This half-term in RE, Year 1 will be exploring the question “How do Hindu stories help believers live their lives?” Children will learn some well‑known Hindu stories, such as tales about Rama and Sita or Krishna, and discover the important messages these stories teach about kindness, bravery, honesty and making good choices. They will explore how these stories guide Hindus in their everyday lives. Through discussion, role‑play and simple creative activities, children will begin to recognise that stories can be special and meaningful to different people.

PSHE

In our myHappymind lessons, children learn about the importance of positive relationships and the skills needed to build and maintain them. The Relate module teaches children how friendships work, why kindness and empathy matter, and how their own feelings and actions can affect others. Through stories, characters, simple neuroscience and practical strategies, children explore the building blocks of healthy relationships, such as listening, teamwork, understanding different perspectives and managing tricky emotions. These lessons help pupils strengthen their confidence, improve their social skills and develop lifelong habits that support their wellbeing and connections with others.

My Happy Mind - Mersey Park Primary School

 Music

As musicians, we follow the Charanga music scheme.
In Music Inspired by the World around us this term, children will explore new songs and enjoy singing together. They will learn about rhythm, pitch, and expression while having fun making music as a group.
